Sustained troubleshooting key to problem solving - PART 1

Problems we all have. We may choose to flee them, forget them, or face them. Depending on our approach to problems, we win or lose. In the face of adversity the only way to prevail is to try, try, try, and try.

We often see obstacles in front of us but fail to notice the surrounding opportunities. Problems are only a matter of perspective. When we are completely stymied by problems, taking a solution oriented approach alone can help us move forward.

In order to develop effective problem solving skills we must understand why problems occur in the first place. Dr Hendrie Weisinger, the author of Emotional Intelligence at Work says, "If we view life as a series of situations that require some kind of response then no situation is inherently a problem. It is the ineffectiveness of your approach that makes it so". This implies that we often create problems ourselves because we fail to choose an appropriate response. We can find better solutions to problems if we recognise a few simple truths about problems:

Setbacks cannot be avoided:
We cannot avoid obstacles but we can certainly avoid giving in to them. The right approach would be to treat problems as part of life. When we are not upset by problems we will not deny or desist them. This helps us to focus more on the positives than on the negatives. We also stop blaming ourselves for the situation we are in and direct our energies towards finding the best solution in the circumstance.

Not unsolvable:
Sustained troubleshooting is the key to success. Whenever we reach a stalemate, it's better to take a break. When we spend some time away from the problems we tend to relax and recharge. As we resume the work with a fresh mind the solution automatically dawns upon us.
