Stretch:
We know there is a problem when the solution is elusive. We have to break a few rules, think outside the box and redefine the existing strategies. If we push the limits of what we can do, we will discover new possibilities. Problem solving involves figuring out the best response to a situation. Here are some tips to solve problems effectively:
Define situation clearly:
We spot problems easily but find it difficult to define them clearly. Supposing you say your job is causing you lot stress it is an abstract way of defining your problem.
It offers no clues as to what exactly is causing you the stress. You must identify the specific irritants that are causing you the stress. The stress could be the result of a demanding boss, heavy workload, incompetent staff, lack of time and other resources or due to office politics. Only when you make an attempt to find the root cause of the problem you will uncover the means to overcome the problem.
Re frame thoughts:
We fail to solve problems when we adopt a narrow view. Blaming somebody or something for our plight only makes us depressed and this hardly helps us in overcoming difficulties. To move ahead we must take a new route. By feeling differently about the problem we can respond in a more effective way. For example the real cause of your stress may not be your boss but the fact that you have not shared about your difficulties with him. If you share your problems with him perhaps he will give you more time and resources to complete your work.
Seek help:
This helps in reducing the complexity of the problem. Prioritising and addressing individual segments makes it easier to map the dependencies between them. On the whole problem solving becomes simpler.
Never give up when faced with a challenge. Be analytical and persistent in dealing with problems. Soon you will discover that problems are actually no problems at all!
